Do MLIS credentials matter?

I am graduating officially in May and given that I'm in my second career and in the second half of my life, what do these credentials mean? I know keeping up with the newest electronic trends is important and changing formats in library materials. But, what does the degree mean to the greater world? I think in some aspects of grants writing it's essential.

Also perhaps in introducing yourself to other professionals at conferences. I wonder though what a Master of Science in Information Science would mean to someone who is from another profession? It's a definition I hope to understand over time, however if anyone has any comments about this question I would be interested in your thoughts?
